Petit Bill’s Bistro Reviews – Ottawa Canada

1293 Wellington Street W. Ottawa Canada

Style: upscale bistro, newfoundland / Montreal style food

Cost: $130 for 2 people, including 2 glasses of wine, taxes and tip

Web site:  http://www.petitbillsbistro.com

Rating [0-5 burp scale]:  4.5  burps

Walking into the stylish bistro off of the busy hubbub of Wellington’s street, you are greeted by the owner who welcomes you and takes your coat. It’s winter here, so we have to dress up with our bulky winter insulation. The pub has a smaller footprint, a full bar with bar stools on the right side and hosts of end of day people having drinks and snacks. The space isn’t huge, but efficiently organized so the staff can move around and not ask you to move all the time. The decor is a combination of pub and fine dinning, very appealing.

Petit Bills Bistro Review

Once seated we are given a wine list and a dinner menu. The beer and wine list is ordinary inventory wise and price wise, give that this is a bistro. Wine by the glass is served from $8 and onwards, which I think is within reason. The menu is anything but ordinary. The appetizers have a blend of Newfoundland and Montreal  flare including  poutine with Lobster in shellfish butter & mascarpone cheese sauce over thinly cut fresh fries and Crab cakes. Other appetizers include  Caesar salad and roasted beef salad. I was impressed with Petit Bills Bistro’s appetizers . The main courses had hints of the same east coast influences. Petit Bills Bistro’s’ main courses  include a French styled rabbit dish, Cod dishes, chorizo seafood styled pasta and a AAA beef dish. The menu was leaning heavily towards white wines though.  I’m a big red wine drinker and was forced to drink white wine.

For the appetizers, I ordered the lobster poutine and my wife tried out the crab cakes. The lobster poutine was alarmingly rich and astoundingly rich. Delicious pieces of lobster in a creamy mascarpone cheese draped over thinly cut fries. I have never had a dish like this and was very impressed on a couple of levels. This is a very creative dish that simply works. I wouldn’t order it again, but thoroughly enjoyed it. My wife’s crab cakes were excellent. Compactly and nicely formed and evenly browned light breaded crust. The  crab cakes was accompanied with roasted garlic aoli & fresh tomato salsa which worked. My main course was the Cod au gratin served on a couscous which I found well seasoned and delicious and fairly priced. The dessert menu was short but well represented with again interesting twists on classics. We ordered 2 bread and butter puddings made with croissants instead of bread. Why not knock the richness and fat content up a tad more! We both found the bread and butter pudding good but not great.

The service staff was excellent, knowledgeable, not in your face telling us about there boyfriends and shopping sprees. The food was served in a reasonable amount of time, allowing us to finish our drinks and courses without having to rush. Petit Bill’s Bistro is a restaurent that I would go back to. I would say it is a pricy for a bistro but worth the extra money. Care is taken in the kitchen, creativity is abundant. A night out well worth the effort. 4 out of 5 burps.
